The company has “jumped on to the bandwagon of social networking” in the hope of increasing its marketing tools and becoming a “virtual friend” to its customers by remaining in touch on the social networks.

Sansiri’s assistant vice president for marketing Samatcha Promsiri said the company believed social networking was a vital marketing tool to maintain a good relationship with its customers and to roll-out its campaigns and promotions in real time.

It has set up Facebook.com/sansiri in the role of a customer-relationship management department and has created its own community comprised of existing customers. It is able to communicate with its community directly and receive quick responses.

Samatcha said the beauty of Facebook.com was its verification of users so the company knew who were and were not its existing customers. New target customers were created among friends attached to the networks of the company’s existing customers.

“For example, we put photos of our activities onto Facebook.com and our fans come and tag their photos as well as sending and sharing them with members of their network. Our customer-relationship management activities can promptly spread to a mass of people, as viral marketing. The things we do expand our customer relationship management to give it a wider presence in the online world,” he said.

Moreover, Sansiri aims to use Facebook.com as a bridge to bring its social-networking community back to its main online market community – www.sansiri.com – where detailed information on all its products and services, as well as latest promotions, are available.

Sansiri is also using Twitter.com as a viral marketing tool to deliver real-time marketing messages to potential customers.

Samatcha said that with a limit of 140 characters, Twitter.com/sansiri also aimed to attract people to the company’s main website.

“At Twitter, we can send messages with a harder marketing purpose than those on Facebook, where we must maintain the attitude of friendship, talking with people in friendly tones in a conversational fashion, rather than delivering hard-sell,” he said.

Sansiri learned a quick lesson when it launched its Facebook site with a hard-sell message seeking to directly attach its community. It failed, and the company later realised it was probably seen as broaching an unfriendly relationship.

”We learnt from direct experience that in a social network, people are not willing to accept direct-marketing messages. Instead, they like to communicate in friendly tones, like they are talking with their friends. Therefore, we have to be their friends,” Samatcha said.

He said social networking allowed Sansiri to communicate directly with both existing and prospective customers, and to get their responses and feedback very quickly, with the least cost and resources. Sansiri has a staff of just two people dedicated to its social marketing and gives the effort a very small budget.

Samatcha said that successfully developing social-network marketing was not about spending money, but about understanding human relationships.

As well as its social networking, Sansiri is spending about Bt600 million per year on online marketing. However, this is only 3 per cent of its total marketing budget of Bt1.8 billion per year.

Samatcha said the company’s next step was a plan to expand its online marketing on to Youtube.com. It plans to launch video clips related to Sansiri’s projects, such as recommended restaurants around Sansiri’s development locations, as well as other places of interest.

”For the moment, we will focus on these three channels of social networking,” Samatcha said. “We think there are many things we can develop on these platforms to optimise their ability to create value for both us and our customers.”

Pol Gen Watcharapol announced this after a meeting of the committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban.

The proposal was made by Pol Gen Watcharapol and strongly supported by Mr Suthep at a previous meeting of the committee, set up to handle the problems of unlicensed taxi drivers and tour guides and other crime at the airport terminal and the entire 20,000 rai facility.

Pol Gen Watcharapol said it was initially agreed that the station would be manned by 280 police from the Central Investigation Bureau and Tourist Police Division. About 1,000 guards employed by Airports of Thailand (AoT) would be made police assistants.

He said this matter would be forwarded to a meeting of the Police Commission in two weeks for discussion about the allocation of a budget and personnel.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand and AoT would be asked to help with financial support for the airport police station.

Pol Gen Watcharapol believed that the new police station would make tourists feel safer.

Suvarnabhumi has been plagued with problems ranging from baggage theft to extortion of tourists. The gigantic facility comes under the supervision of Samut Prakan’s urban Racha Thewa police station, which has just 200 staff.

Foreign travelers who had been detained on suspicion of shoplifting inside the terminal – some in dubious circumstances – had complained of fearing for their safety when taken from the airport to Racha Thewa police station.

Pol Gen Watcharapol had earlier said, to back up his proposal, that between 80,000 and 120,000 people pass through the airport every day but Racha Thewa station can send only 50 police to keep law and order.

A city of over 1 million people was totally destroyed and those of its inhabitants who did not escape were killed or made slaves and taken back to Burma [ Myanmar ]. Accordingly war and invasion dominated the psyche of the Siamese people and all the new leaders were military men. Bangkok was chosen to be the new capital of Siam for strategic military reasons. The fortifications reflected more modern war fare and no longer were moats and narrow walls to stop elephants sufficient. The following remains of the fortifications made from 1768 are still there to be seen now.

1] The City Wall of Rama 1
These walls were started in 1782 and ran parallel to the Chao Phraya River as it is today and was 7 kilometers long, 3.6 metres high and 2.7 meters think. At every 400 meters there was a fort complex and in total it had 63 gates although 47 of these were very narrow entrances. Most of these forts and the walls were subsequently removed as the city expanded and threats of Burmese invasion ceased. Similarly war frare become such with advanced canons that they become ineffective in protecting the population behind them. The modern beneit of being a tourist attraction was never contemplated, as is the case in Beijing and other great fortified cities. Part of the wall and a canon and other artifacts can be seen in the outdoor museum in the grounds of Bangkok’s Thammasart University adjacent to the Chao Phrao River Bank.

[2] Wichaiprasit Fort
Wichayen Fort as it was first named was constructed during the reign of King Narai. There was also another fort on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River. At times these two Forts were joined by a metal chain which crossed the river just below the water level to prevent unauthorised vessels traveling upstream and in land.

[3] Phra Sumen Fort
Phra Sumen Fort was built on what is now the north end of Phra Athit Road running a longside the Chao Phraya River and was one of the first 14 Forts constructed on the outer wall. The surrounding area is now a public park with views over the Chao Phraya River. The other remaining Fort of the original 14 is Fort Mahakan.

Returning recently from a jaunt in Europe I was faced with a 12-hour stopover in Bangkok. Yes, it sounds like crap, and it was.

Hopping off the KLM tumbrel cart I had been strapped to for 13 hours, I slid through customs like a ghost – my head felt like someone had lined it with newspaper and replaced my brain with a ferret.

I had grand plans of hanging out at the airport. I figured that Suvarnabhumi in all its shiny newness must have something to entertain a weary wanderer for half a day. How wrong I was. My dreams of showers and cinemas, libraries and lounges were as false as the eyelashes of the local kathoey. My mother lives on the New South Wales South Coast and Moruya airport has more to offer than Bangkok’s; at least you can feed the bloody kookaburra. There was nothing to do but drag my feet around, politely declining offers of luxury cabs. The place was a boring temple to international dullness.

My aimlessness soon turned to the feverish rage of the overtired; the clock seemed frozen, the Bangkok Post was devoid of the usual lurid Thai crime stories, and the security guards were getting irritating. Broken, I realised that my only hope was to get the hell away. First I wolfed down a bowl of spicy soup and a fresh coconut, which improved my outlook no end, then I headed to the taxis.

A smiling man from Issan was my saviour, and some 45 minutes later I was loafing about the marble floors of the MBK, one of the world’s greatest small-business hives. Like a happy drone, I wandered about for hours, while around me the shopkeepers slurped soup. When the ferret in my head started to squeak I knew it was time to head back to the airport and check in. Early.

When People’s Alliance for Democracy protesters blockaded the airport for over a week in November 2008 , I was impressed I can tell you. I think I’d prefer a week at the dentist.

Bangkok is excess in all of its unrestrained glory. Bigger, better, more: the city is insatiable, a monster that feeds on concrete, shopping malls and diesel exhaust. The city demands that you be in the present and in the moment, not necessarily for a religious epiphany, but because the city is self-absorbed and superficial, blissfully free of wrinkle-inducing self-reflection. Smiles and sà·nùk (the Thai word for ‘fun’) are the key passports into Bangkok society. A compliment here, a joke there – the demands of social lubrication in this megalopolis are more akin to a small village than an anonymous city and a necessity for survival. As Bangkok forcefully kneads out of you all demands for order and predictability, you’ll understand the famous Thai smile. It is the metaphorical brakes on the urban overdrive. Packed into these concrete corridors are religious spectacle, unapologetic consumerism and multi-flavoured hedonism – corrupting and purifying souls within footsteps of each other. A tragicomic confluence of human desires and aspirations best viewed through a detached smile.

Of the famous and infamous attractions, Bangkok’s best feature is its intermingling of opposites. A modern world of affluence orbits around a serene traditional core. Step outside the four-star hotels into a typical Siamese village where taxi drivers knock back energy drinks and upcountry transplants grill chicken on a streetside barbecue. Hop the Skytrain to the glitzy shopping malls where trust-fund babies examine luxury brands as carefully as the housewives inspect produce at the open-air markets. Or appreciate the attempts at enlightenment at the city’s famous temples and doorstep shrines, or simple acts of kindness amid the urban bustle.

You can jump between all of these worlds – wining and hobnobbing at a chic club, eating at a streetside market, getting plucked and pummelled into something more beautiful, or sweating profusely on a long unplanned march. Bangkok is an urban connoisseur’s dream come true.
